How to turn on grayscale mode

Make your iPhone screen black and white to reduce the visual pull of colorful apps and notifications.

Grayscale mode removes all color from your iPhone screen, making apps and notifications far less visually stimulating. Paired with Blank Spaces, it's one of the most effective ways to reduce mindless phone usage.

How to enable grayscale

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap Accessibility → Display & Text Size.

  3. Tap Color Filters and toggle it on.

  4. Select Grayscale and drag the Intensity slider all the way to the right.

Your entire screen will now display in black and white.

Bonus: Toggle grayscale on and off with a triple-click

You may not want grayscale on all the time — for example, when viewing photos or using maps. You can set up a shortcut to toggle it instantly.

  1. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Accessibility Shortcut (at the very bottom).

  2. Tap Color Filters.

  3. Now triple-click the side button at any time to toggle grayscale on or off.
